Key Stage 4 Approach

We offer a two year Key Stage 4 programme that students follow in Years 10 and 11. All students study a combination of core (compulsory) and option subjects. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum meets all National Curriculum requirements.

All students study all the core subjects and these courses all lead to GCSE exams. Students are taught in ability sets for English, Maths and Science (with some students placed onto the Triple Science pathway).

All our optional subjects lead to GCSE or BTEC qualifications. We aim to ensure that each individual student’s Key Stage 4 programme is tailored to their interests, at the same time as providing appropriate challenges and the right basis for future study and careers. At the point when students make their option choices, each student has an individual Options Interview with a senior member of staff who provides advice and guidance. In addition, any student who wishes to have individual careers advice from the academy’s independent Careers Advisor is able to do so.

All students study Geography or History GCSE and, dependent on academic ability, some students are placed on the English Baccalaureate Options Pathway. This means that in addition to a humanities subject they also study a modern foreign language. The remaining two options are free choices. We believe that for the students placed on this pathway, the range of subjects they study will best equip them for future study and careers.
